TEXTILES & TRADITIONS FROM THE COASTAL REGION
The textiles of the Southern Sierra Region are all woven on a back-strap loom then embroidered by hand. Santa Maria Zacatepec is well known for producing their own cotton and thread and making the entire textile and its components with local materials. The red dye used in their embroidery is made with #cochineal bugs. The women's #huipil is a three panel dress with brocade patterns and the men’s dress is considered one that has remained the closest to its original Pre-Hispanic ancestor. Made with triangular panels with openings on the sides and arms, it has small detailed embroideries that often depict eagles, deer and other animals that belong to local myths and legends.
